Artnet: A Show You May Have Missed…

Just two more days remain to catch Carole Feuerman’s terrific solo exhibition at Ethan Cohen Gallery in Chelsea. “I Am Mine, Without Permission” features hyperrealist sculptures from the 1970s through the 1990s. These are mostly male and female torsos, unevenly cropped and sexually suggestive. Their radical intimacy hits you first. Then you notice their technical mastery: hands clutching flesh and underwear, with every broken nail, Band-Aid, and tan line articulated in materials including resin, marble, silicone, and lacquer. These works predate Feuerman’s better-known sculptures of swimmers, which have appeared on New York’s Park Avenue in 2023, at the Eiffel Tower during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, and along the Magnificent Mile in Chicago this summer. Her earlier works hark back to another art world—more experimental, less commercial. It was before my time, but I can’t help feeling nostalgic for it.
